Local Addresses and the Central Mail Hub
Policies
affecting use of Off Campus Email Facilities
The following summarises
policies affecting the use of email addresses. Whilst these primarily
affect students, staff too will be prone to some of the potential problems
of use of off campus email facilities.
- The central email
address will be used for all official email communications from the
university and most departments. Some of these messages may contain
important announcements, such as course work deadlines.
- Email may be directed
to a server or servers of your choice (including commercially run servers
elsewhere on the Internet). However, this is done at your own risk and
the University cannot be responsible for the failure to deliver email
any redirected email to an off campus address used in this way.
- Information Services
blocks email from servers from time to time for security, junk email
control and other policy reasons. If you are using a server that becomes
blocked, it is your responsibility to rectify the problem either by
transferring to one that is not blocked or persuading your service provider
to rectify the problem.
- It is recognised
that distant learning students may be more likely to use off campus
facilities. Web interfaces are provided to nearly all servers on campus
to make remote access easier (see webmail.bham.ac.uk). If other servers
are used, the same conditions and limitations apply.
- Use of email is
subject to the General Conditions of Use of Computing Facilities
In practice, there
are very few problems with use of off-campus facilities. However, it must
be pointed out that use of any server which is accessed via the JANET/USA
links, or which uses adverts delivered via these links, costs the University
money over and above our fixed network costs. This diverts resources away
from other areas such as provision of computers on campus. We would therefore
urge people to use local facilities unless your access will be via an
ISP and not from on campus.
