Junk Email Advice to People Responsible for Departmental Email Servers General

Steps should be taken to ensure that your system cannot be used for relaying. For many systems the easiest way to achieve this is to refuse all incoming SMTP connections that do not originate within the bham.ac.uk domain (147.188.*.*). This is adequate for most systems at the present time.
Some systems will support relaying if email is received in the form

xxx%dotcom.com@server.bham.ac.uk

where dotcom.com is the target site and server bham.ac.uk is the departmental server. The @server.bham.ac.uk is stripped off the address and the message is forwarded to xxx@dotcom.com
